Learn To Read!

Reading More Than Words! is a video-based self-help reading program that presents six basic skills to assist with reading comprehension. Components include four videotapes or two DVD’s (either format includes the exact same material), with over 2 1/2 hours of instruction. Three Activity Books and over 200 “Skill Blaster” cards also accompany the set. It can also be purchased as a two DVD/CD set; this version has all of the print material on one CD.

The program is designed for learners who have some basic reading skills and are now ready to understand and learn from their reading. The first unit begins with “Getting the Main Idea” of what is being read. Building from this basic skill, the program presents skills for: Finding the Facts, Understanding Sequence, Following Directions, Understanding Words from the Context, and Drawing Conclusions. Numerous learning and study tips are included throughout the program. Activity books offer a variety of short stories with related activities for reinforcement of each skill, and the “Skill Blaster” cards offer additional practice. These short selections are great for learners who don’t want to do “workbook-type” practice. The selections from nature, science, history, geography and literature are quick, fun to use, and promote interaction between learners and their helpers.

The Audience:
  • New readers (of all ages) who have the basic skills to read words and are ready to build comprehension skills
  • Any learner wanting to improve skills for understanding and remembering what he/she reads.
  • Those who wish to help others with reading comprehension skills.
The Approach:

An introduction provides an overview of what the program is about, specific directions for using it, and general hints for more effective learning--including how to use a dictionary. Each unit begins with the video portion and directs the learner to “Skill Blaster” cards and to Activity Books at the appropriate times. Learners are given immediate feedback of correct answers--either on the video or in print. They are frequently reminded to review their material. Progress is self-paced, allowing learners to spend as much time as needed in one area before moving ahead. Learners can work alone or with a helper.
